Homeowners be warned: Big storms can bring bad contractors

Living in the Richardson area means you're bound to see a number of big storms plow through our state during the summer months. In some cases, these storms can leave massive amounts of damage in their paths. In fact, just recently, grapefruit-sized hail fell in the Odessa area and neighboring cities in West Texas, severely damaging roofs, windows, siding, cars and more.

After a hailstorm, windstorm, tornado or hurricane leaves town, contractors are not far behind, oftentimes going door to door in hopes of helping homeowners rebuild - all the while collecting insurance money in the process. It's at this point that homeowners - as well as business owners - need to be leery.

Watching out for storm-chasing contractors

Not all building contractors are looking out for your best interests. As a 2011 article written for Angie's List warns, storm-chasing contractors have been known to come into town after a big storm, promising full repairs at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, some companies are less than reputable, sometimes collecting insurance checks then leaving shoddy work, or collecting insurance money then completing no work at all.

Shoddy work can leave you in the lurch

Poor-quality repairs can easily lead to further damage when water seeps into your home's structure, potentially resulting in mold. In addition, repairs that aren't up to code likely won't be covered by your insurance, leaving you with a possible financial and legal headache.

Taking legal action is a possibility

If a contractor does bad work that results in further property damage or skips town before completing repairs, you could have grounds for a civil action. These types of legal cases are not easy to manage on your own. Instead, legal counsel is highly advised.
